Here comes LeRoux, the best cowboy on the Grid in a sleek netcraft (The "Exorcizer") with a rescue plan (B) that just might work. Problem is, LeRoux is not really all that real either. Or is he?
Bender Loop Ken Schiff 9781482328356 Books
Bender’s Loop takes us on one crazy thrill ride filled with sharp, witty satire of contemporary culture, yet with scenes of great beauty drawn in precise, lovely language. Like a roller coaster, the narrative keeps us off-balance and slightly disoriented, but Schiff never loses control, guiding readers through rapidly shifting realities with a firm hand. Is it real, or is it cyberspace? Is there a difference? His writing is clean and sharp as a new blade; he draws us into reverie with a lyrical scene, makes us laugh aloud, then scares hell out of us in the next line. Schiff’s extensive literary background informs his work, adding allusive depth without ever being pretentious. I love this book. It’s a ride I’ll return to again and again and again.

Bender Loop Ken Schiff 9781482328356 Books Reviews
Ken Schiff's fascinating new book, Bender's Loop, quickly engages the reader in a journey to a dystopic future where society is repressed, clinical, regulated, and humans struggle to find meaning. I found his writing edgy, interesting, and compelling as he led me through this dark world. Forecasting our present society's infatuation with alternate realities and sexual mores, Schiff presents a world in which the real and the virtual are truly indistinct from each other as Bender, the titular protagonist, deals with an affair which turns his life inside out. It is a rare gift that results in a work both this terrifying and this funny!
Early on in the reading of this postmodern science fiction novel, you begin to notice the elegant, polished prose that I suppose, fairly or unfairly, one would expect from a novelist nominated for the National Book Award. And whatever Mr. Schiff's ultimate intention was in writing this rather strange, wonderful book, his dystopian take on a college professor lost in a disturbingly incomprehensible virtual world has the effect of taking genre fiction, in this case science fiction, to the level of art. This is a book that might have been collaboratively conjured up by Franz Kafka and Ray Bradbury after an acid-laced lunch with the likes of Timothy Leary. This is dark comedy at its very best--disturbing, claustrophobic, nightmarish--yet hilarious as hell and full of insight into a mad modern digital world.
What a wild and wonderful read! Smart, funny, and well-crafted prose--I was riveted by overlapping, converging, and dissolving plot spirals. He had me with the witch on the hill! I stayed to find out what the witch? I'll remember the serious underlying social concerns and political criticism. The setting in cyberspace will appeal to college-age readers, references to popular culture span generations, and the human elements transcend demographic categories. What could be better than a fun read that makes you think? A well-written, good book that you'll remember. I'll enjoy re-reading it in the future!
Bender's Loop is a well-crafted novel that leaves the reader no recourse but to go along for a wild and rollicking ride with the protagonist, accompanying him and sharing in his bewilderment as he finds himself careening through a crazily changing dystopian world. Whether hurtling through a collapsing universe with a decidedly uncourageous Bender, or with him in a room with the supercilious Dr. Mobius (who has a disturbingly prurient interest in his client's therapy) as Bender slowly begins to grasp what is happening to him, Schiff skillfully leads you through a strange and turbulent world as he weaves his story. Oh - and did I mention that this book is hilarious? The humor is edgy, delightfully subtle, and quite dark, with Schiff's popular references and social criticisms adding to the fun.
I cannot end this review without remarking on how wonderfully written this novel is. In a time when so many contemporary works leave me longing for well-written prose, Schiff's skillful handling of language shines.
Another excellent and amazing book.
